International House of Blues Foundation (Cultural Journeys)
IHOBF’s Cultural Journeys Teacher Workshop: Cultural Journeys takes teachers and
students on a journey to explore different cultures, music and instruments from around the
world and enjoy both listening to and playing rhythms. Cultural Journeys Teacher
Workshops have been designed to involve teachers in an engaging, interactive learning
experience and provide them with knowledge and resources to introduce Cultural Journeys
program content and related learning activities into classrooms and other educational
settings. The workshop features live drumming and hands-on activities. Workshop
participants receive the Roots of Rhythm: World Drumming for Fifth and Sixth Grade
Classrooms teacher’s guide. Although the curriculum has been designed for fifth and sixth
grade, teachers can adapt the content for use with other grade levels. The curriculum
supports teachers in integrating music-making activities and related cultural content into
their classrooms. Workshop and curricular content and activities align with state and
national educational standards.
The IHOBF Cultural Journeys Teacher Workshop includes a Rhythms Session featuring live
drumming and teacher participation and a Demonstration Session on how to use the Roots
of Rhythm teacher’s guide. The workshop will also include a session that focuses on New
Orleans Brass Band and Mardi Gras Indian drumming traditions and rhythms and that
features a drum-making activity. Participants in the workshop will be eligible to apply to have
their classroom participate in an IHOBF extended learning activity that focuses on New
Orleans drumming traditions and which includes an artist's visit to the classroom and a
related learning resource. The workshop was presented by ethnomusicologist Michael D.
Skinkus.
